Car break-in suspect speeds away from hospital, crashes into tree

A man who police say was seen breaking into a car at a hospital in Charlotte crashed into a tree after they say he tried to speed away from security guards early Monday morning.
The wreck occurred in the 800 block of Queens Road in the Myers Park area.
According to Sharon Harmon, a spokesperson forHospital, a public safety officer spotted a man entering a car around 1:30 a.m. in the employee parking lot located across the street from the hospital on Hawthorne Lane
When the security officer approached the man and attempted to stop him, he jumped into a rented sports utility vehicle, and drove out of the parking lot.The man droveon Queens Road through the Myers Park area, possibly reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. A short time later, the driver lost control crashed into a large oak tree.
Charlotte firefighters worked for over 20 minutes to free the man using the jaws of life.
The man suffered critical injuries and was transported
Carolinas Medical Center.
As a result of the crash, Queens Road was closed for hours while reconstruction techniciansinvestigated the accident.
