A suspect driving a stolen car eluded authorities Thursday after a tense high-speed chase on a wet, congested stretch of the Garden State Parkway.
Though it was brief, the chase wasn’t short on hair-raising elements.
At around 11 a.m., Matawan Patrolman Brian Murphy attempted to pull over a gray, two-door Acura that was reported stolen out of Orange, Lieutenant Ben Smith said. The driver slowed down and appeared as if they were about to pull over, but hit the gas for Route 34 north,
They just took off on himThe driver went up 34 to Morristown Road and got onto the Parkway at exit 120, where the driver continued southbound at speeds of up to, and possibly above, 90 mph, SmithThe car continued to exit 105 in Eatontown then cut across traffic and the grass median of the Parkway into northbound traffic, Smith Once the driver made it up to the area of the Cheesequake rest stop, at mile-marker 123, Smith“that’s when we called it off. The rain was just coming down pretty good,” and the amount of traffic, he added, was unsafe for police to continue.The driver headed northPolice were able to get a license plate number off the car, and Sgt. Brian Polite of the State Policeauthorities will continue to investigate the case.
