Mercedes-Benz plans BMW Mega City rival

The premium electric vehicles market is starting to heat up. Mercedes-Benz, BMW’s old-time and classic rival, has kicked off styling studies into a range of new alternative-drive city cars as part of a project known internally under the working title Mega City MobilityAccording to the new MB electric vehicle is aimed at the 2013 BMW Megacity Vehicle, rumored to be unveiled in a concept form within the next few months. The car is being styled at the company’s Yokahama-based studio in Japan under the direction of Holger Hutzenlaub, who heads the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios.Interesting enough, Autocar managed to get some exclusive photographs that reveal a range of ideas that have already come out of the Mega City Mobility project, including sketches and a clay model of a stylish new one-box offering.magazine mentions that Mercedes-Benz took the decision to start the Mega City Mobility project in Japan based on the country’s acute lack of space and the solutions that are being generated to provide an increased standard of living in large cities.One of the first products to stem from Mercedes-Benz’s Mega City Mobility project will be the new Smart E-scooter, a similar offering as the new MINI E Scooter.In the same premium electric market, Audi is planning their own city vehicle set to come off the same platform as parent company Volkswagen’s new Up city car.BMW plans to launch their first Megacity in 2013 as a car that caters to mobility and urban environment. BMW believes that the Megacity vehicle will be the first volume-produced automobile to employ the significant benefits afforded by carbon technology.
