Record Rain Soaks Rochester

The Rochester area set a record for rainfall Sunday, with about 1.75 inches in a 24-hour period.  The heaviest rain fell between 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., stranding drivers across the area.
Interstate 490 was shut down sometime after 3:00 p.m. because underpasses at Goodman St. and Culver Rd. were completely flooded.  Cars were diverted off 490, but traffic was slowed to a crawl for more than an hour as police tried to steer people away from danger.
Two cars were also stuck under the railroad tracks on South Winton Rd., near University Ave.  And on East Ave., one man driving a pizza delivery car was forced to stand on his roof to escape the rising water.
The headquarters for Rural/Metro ambulance on West Avenue started taking on water around 2:30 p.m.  Rochester firefighters were called to help pump the water out.
"I think when we arrived, there was a bout a foot of water in the office area,
Chief John McDermott. "We've got some gasoline pumps working now and it's doing a good job of clearing it outdid not get any reports of delayed responses from Rural/Metro.  But one viewer did tell us that he was put on hold for at least a minute when he called 911 during the height of Sunday's storm.  A recorded message told him operators were dealing with a high volume of calls.Several homes and businesses were flooded around Rochester and there were several reports of lightning strikes.
