Paffett happy to take small step in listings

Gary Paffett produced a strong drive at the Nurburgring to finish eighth in the latest round of action in the German Touring Cars Championship
A tricky qualifying session caused by heavy rainfall resulted in the Haverhill driver starting 13th on the grid.
But a quick start helped him move up to ninth by the end of lap one, after which he spent much of the race battling with Miguel Molina, Filipe Albuquerque and Renger van der Zande.
He eventually managed to pass Molina after the second round of pit stops for eighth place and he managed to hold it, eventually crossing the line a little more than half a second adrift of fifth place. It earned him one championship point to draw level with Burwell’s Oliver Jarvis, the pair being joint ninth in the drivers’ standings with 10 points.
We knew we were in for a tough race after qualifying in 13th, so considering where I started on the grid I’m happy to have made up five positions," said Mercedes driver Paffett. "I was very happy with my start and, with the cars so evenly matched this year, it was a tough but enjoyable fight.
"I set the second fastest lap of the race, so it’s encouraging to see that the pace is there."
Audi driver Jarvis also endured a difficult qualifying session and started 15th. He also managed to move through the field but had to settle for 10th.
"It was an interesting race," he said. "In the first and second stint I had some thrilling battles. But we started too far at the rear. Tenth place isn’t bad considering our grid position but, on the whole, it was a disappointing weekend."
Paffett and Jarvis will next be in action in front of their home fans when the
heads to Brands Hatch on September 4.
