After we got the first details and photos of the M Sport package designed for the new 6 Series generation, BMW released new information which announces that both the Coupe and Convertible variants of the German model will get the well-known xDrive system but also a new six-cylinder diesel unit. After BMW revealed the M Sport package which brings only styling tweaks, new details announce that an all-wheel drive version will enter the range alongside a new diesel unit, both of them by this fall.
2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe To begin with, the Germans announced that you will be able to fit your new BMW 650i with the xDrive all-wheel drive system. The xDrive system will be optionally available for the model mentioned above, for both Coupe and Convertible variants.

The new BMW 650i comes with a turbocharged V8 unit able to deliver 407 horsepower, the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h being possible in 4,8 seconds for the Coupe while the Convertible needs an additional 0,1 seconds. Of course, the figures above are available for the new BMW 650i fitted with the xDrive system as the figures are a little bit different with the all-wheel drive system than the rear-wheel drive.

The xDrive system for the new BMW 6 Series will be available starting this fall, the same debut date being available for the new diesel unit we will talk about further. Therefore, BMW plans to add a new 3.0-liter six-cylinder unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology to the current BMW 640d lineup. Of course, this unit will be available for both Coupe and Convertible models and is announced to deliver 313 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 630 Nm of torque.

The BMW 640d Coupe fitted with the new diesel engine is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5,5 seconds while the Convertible model is 0,1 seconds slower. The Bavarians were generous enough to release some fuel consumption figures as well, the Coupe version returning a fuel consumption of 5,5 liters/100 km while for the Convertible, BMW announced 5,7 liters/100 km and CO2 emissions of 149 g/km.
2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe
“The launch of the BMW 640d CoupĂ© and BMW 640d Convertible sees BMW setting another new benchmark in the premium environs of the exclusive luxury 2+2-seater segment when it comes to efficient driving pleasure. Their predecessors successfully established diesel technology in this class of car. And now the engine that achieved such acceptance has passed on the title of the world’s sportiest six-cylinder diesel to its even more powerful and economical successor,” says BMW.
