Smoking rate in New York drop to lowest level

New York officials said yesterday that about 450 thousand residents quit smoking since 2002, the smoking rate to fall from 22 to 14 percent, a record low. Said Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York, said that almost 35 percent of adult smokers quit the habit since 2002, including 100 thousand in the period from 2009 to 2010.

There are still 850 thousand adult smokers in New York. Bloomberg said «Smoking is the main cause of premature death, preventable, today in New York City we are proud that a record number of New Yorkers are saving lives by giving up the habit». And the rate of smoking among adolescents in the city by 9 percent to 20 percent in the period between 2001 and 2009.

This decline comes after the 2002 ban on smoking in bars and restaurants in the city, and increasing government taxes on cigarettes twice to reach 35 percent in 2002 and 58 percent in 2010.
