BMW Developing Laser Headlights for Cars

Not only are laser headlights more efficient they requireless than half the energy consumptionbut they're also capable of producing a near-parallel beam a thousand times more intense than conventionalStandard lighting generates around 100 lumens per watt, while laser lighting generates 170 lumens. If you're picturing BMW's blasting fellow motorists off the road with headlight laser beams, think again. Safety, particularly eye safety, has been a top priority of thistechnology. Don't worry, you won't fry your retinas when one of these cars pops up in your rear-view mirror. The bluish laser light is converted by a phosphor material insidea pure whitelight which is very bright and pleasant to the eye.As well, this technology could literally reshape the design of future BMW vehicles. Laser diodes are one hundred times smaller than the square-shaped cells used meaning BMW designers couldtheoretically tinker with the dimensions and depth of the headlights. While BMW engineers say they have no plans to radically reduce the size of the headlights, they acknowledge the new technology will play an important role in the styling of future BMW models and will also yield new alternatives for headlight positioning and body design.
