John Travolta's 'vintage Mercedes-Benz convertible stolen from the street'


John Travolta was left stranded in Santa Monica yesterday when his car was stolen right off the street. His vintage sports car, a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL, was taken while he was visiting a Jaguar car dealer, The Saturday Night Fever star was only away from the vehicle, which is estimated to be worth up to $100,000, for around 10 minutes. He is understood to have returned to the dealership after discovering the car had vanished to wait for police to arriveTravolta has long been a car enthusiast, however his real passion is for planes.'I had to content myself with cars before I could ever contemplate owning a planeMy first, in 1974, was a 1962 Oldsmobile.I had some minor work, got paid and wanted to get on the road. It was a small step to what I wanted to achieve.'Travolta's car collection is said to include a Rolls-Royce, Jaguar XJ6 and his beloved classic Thuderbirds. in 2007: 'I have a 55, 56 and 57 Thunderbird – American Fords in the great old tradition. I love the fact that they could achieve speed and distance with such style. I don’t use them for long journeys any more, but to just enjoy the drive.'
